If you are anything like me, taking family photos at least once per year is a must on your to-do list. Little ones grow so fast! As a sentimental mama, I want to make sure to capture my daughter at every stage…as a baby, toddler and beyond. One of the most stressful parts of having photos taken is typically, “What should we wear?” In this post, I will be going over what my own family will, be wearing for photos to include shoppable links to all of the pieces. I hope after reading this, you wont be left wondering what to wear for fall family photos.
Side note: I just recently framed and hung our family photos from Spring of 2023! These images are from over a year ago! It is wild how much my daughter has changed in just 12 short months. Time really does slip away from us. I am making a goal to get my next set of family photos framed within 3 months of receiving them! Hold me to it!
As I am planning for our own fall family photos, I am having way too much fun putting outfits together. Below is exactly what I am planning for my own family to wear.
I am inspired by neutral colors, lots of yummy texture, and subtle pops of color like brown and orange.
Doen recently had a major sale and you KNOW I was all over it. I purchased 2 dresses that would both be perfect for family photos at any time of year. I like having options and probably wont know which dress I’ll wear until the day of. The first is the Doen Katherina Dress.
The second dress, The Doen Rosabella, is a little “frillier” and has pretty buttons and more intricate details.
I’d pair either of these dresses (which are pretty “summery” being that they are white) with a chunky cardigan in cream or brown to bring in some texture and fall vibes (See my collages below). I really like this cozy cardigan from Sezane. There are multiple color options…like a soft white, a pale pink, etc.
For a brown option, I’d maybe go with the Emile Cardigan by Sezane. The chunky alpaca knit is gorgeous! (Tip: I always check Poshmark when I find a piece of clothing I like. You can find clothing that has been worn once or not at all. Poshmark is also handy to check when a piece is sold out online.
I am also obsessed with this pumpkin orange cardigan by Doen. YUM. (Sold out online, I’d check Poshmark for this).
For Eleanor’s outfit, I wanted a dress with a cute pattern. Since my dress/cardigan and my husbands outfit will all be in solid colors, I could play a little with the pattern of her dress.
Here is a dress I have in mind for her. It is the Dora Dress by Doen.
Another option…The Daphne dress from NoraLee. (NoraLee is having a huge sale right now!)
For toddler shoes, I found these adorable velvet mary janes on Amazon. There are tons of colors.
I plan to pair her dress with this cardigan from The GapxDoen collab. SOOO pretty!
For my hubby, a pair of khaki pants, closed toe dress shoes, and a button down with a sweater over top will be perfect. Again, his sweater will add that layered/textured element that is perfect for fall. Check out the collages below to see it all come together.
Shoes: I love the Bedstu Rayburn boots. A classic.
Pants: Jcrew makes awesome khaki pants for men.
Sweater: I love the LL Bean fisherman sweaters. So cozy.
One tool that helps me visualize outfits together is the Indyx app. I have been having so much fun “digitizing” my wardrobe over the past month. (Check out my closet here). I took all of the items in my closet (dresses, tops, pants, jewelry, bags, shoes etc) and input them into the app. From there, you can visualize all of your items and create outfits….I went from feeling like I had nothing to wear to realizing just how many combinations and outfit possibilities I really had!
Here are the collages I made for our outfits using the Indyx app.
(It’s way too much fun playing with outfit combinations.)
Some of my favorite brands of clothing for photos are Doen, Rylee and Cru, Hill House Home, Nora Lee, Jcrew, and Banana Republic, etc.
If you do not want to purchase the clothing items, you can also consider renting! Companies like Rent the Runway or Nuuly have a great variety of options. You can also check out Poshmark for gently used clothing items. The sezane cardigan linked above is a great example of loving something and finding that it is sold out online…what a bummer. In this case, I’d go to Poshmark or another resale site to see if I could find the color and size I want. I have also found gorgeous Doen dresses on Poshmark in the past. When in doubt, check Poshmark before buying new. They have great secondhand options.
It is my hope that this post sparked some inspiration and you wont be wondering what to wear for fall family photos. Check out the Indyx app and have some fun creating outfits!
