The apple trees in Virginia usually bloom at the end of April into May, creating the most beautiful backdrop for spring portrait sessions. As a Northern Virginia family photographer, I love photographing family sessions in the spring when the flowers are blooming and temperatures are comfortable for little ones to be outside exploring the world around them. This session took place at Orrs Farm Market in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Capturing the special bond between mamas and their little ones is my passion! I let the children lead the way, and follow their cues. If they want to explore, let’s let them!
What To Wear For Spring Family Photos
I love that Nadia chose neutral colors for their outfits. It created the perfect contrast against the colorful pink blossoms and allowed them to be the focus of the images. For your spring family photos, I recommend wearing light, neutral colors. Soft pinks, creams, blues, etc are perfect and will compliment the blooming surroundings.
Tips For A Smooth Family Session With Little Ones
When photographing little ones, I love to let them lead the session. This means letting them walk around, explore, and snuggle up with mama. Because babies and toddlers tend to have short attention spans, it’s the perfect opportunity to get candid images full of smiles and wonder. Coming into the session with no expectations is also helpful, because it allows you to have fun and go with the flow. I prepare all of my clients for a smooth family session in the weeks leading up to their session!
What to Bring To Your Family Session
I always suggest families bring a few props, like a blanket to sit on or hats to wear. This adds a more texture and personality to your images. You don’t need to over do it, and less is usually more!
Other things to bring:
- Snacks for children
- Neutral colored toys to catch their attention
- A stroller or wagon if there will be walking involved
